About Citizen Schools

Citizen Schools is a growing national network of after-school education programs for students in the middle grades. Its programs complement classroom learning by engaging students in hands-on learning projects led by adult volunteers after school and supported by a staff of professional educators.

Mission

We mobilize a second shift of afternoon educators, who provide academic support, leadership development, and "apprenticeships," hands-on projects taught by volunteers from business and civic organizations. At Citizen Schools, students develop the skills they need to succeed in high school, college, the workforce, and civic life.

Impact

Citizen Schools is proving that high-quality after-school education programs are achieving positive results. We are committed to identifying clear goals for our work with students, parents, schools and communities; collecting data related to our goals; and using this information to allocate resources, inform decisions and improve the impact of our programs.

We look at our impact in three ways: by a rigorous independent evaluation, through internal analysis of our program's effectiveness, and by the excellent work apprentices create every semester, work we call WOW!
