EP Updates From the Field: Summer 2021

The final bells have rung on the unprecedented 2020-2021 school year, and many across K-12 are already getting geared up for what comes next: another year balancing community safety with student learning and engagement.

This summer, Education Pioneers is pleased to share highlights from our Fellowships and broader network -- part of a new series of periodic updates and reflections from the field.

NETWORK IN ACTION

Education Pioneers leaders stepped up to tackle urgent priorities within school systems and other organizations during 2020-2021. In total, they reached 12.6 million students and families nationwide.

More than 3,000 EP Alumni work as leaders at all levels within education.
  • 1 in 3 EP Alumni are already senior leaders.
  • 1,000+ Alums are working on the front-lines of school district, charter network, and education agency response to COVID-19.
  • More than 4,500+ EP Alumni are leaders in sectors nationwide -- 2,400 of whom self-identify as leaders of color.
Twenty-four EP COVID Response Fellows are serving in chief of staff-like roles focused on pandemic priorities.
  • Five Fellows are leading COVID testing and/or vaccination efforts for teachers and students, impacting more than 6M students.
  • Seven Fellows are managing charter network reopening & response teams, impacting 20K students.
  • Four Fellows are ensuring systems have the technology, PPE, and other materials needed for remote and in-person learning, impacting 1M+ students.
Twenty-three EP Impact Fellows are finishing placements in analytics, project management, and implementation.
  • “My proudest moment was reducing ed tech costs in my organization by 40%, and developing organization-wide data practice[s] automating most of the processes within the organization."
  • “My proudest moment was working against all odds to navigate a political clearance process and ultimately publish Office of Educational Technology's Teacher and School Leader Digital Learning Guides.”
Stay tuned: Additional highlights from our Impact Fellows coming soon!

BUILDING CAPACITY IN K-12

The work continues. With K-12 focused on learning recovery and fueled by unprecedented federal funding, education organizations need more implementation talent than ever. EP’s upcoming cohort of 2021-2022 Impact Fellows will be central to this effort, providing analytic and project management capacity starting this fall. More education organizations than in recent years are calling on Fellows to take on work:

  • Helping schools re-open (and stay open) safely for learning
  • Creating evaluation and accountability systems for new and old initiatives
Recruiting and retaining an exceptional educator workforce
  • Exploring new instructional models and school designs
  • And more.

We’re currently placing a diverse cohort of 40+ Impact Fellows at interested education organizations -- on our way to growing cohort size by 1.75x+ compared to 2020.

2021 Agents of Change COVID Response Roundtables
This spring, more than 150 EP Alumni convened for the first-ever national, virtual Agents of Change -- a signature EP event re-imagined for Zoom, and planned exclusively by Alums for Alums. This first event sparked dialogue and additional local EP events. We’ve launched a new virtual series for Alumni: intimate roundtables highlight learnings and insights from EP’s COVID Response Fellows. The first event was in July. Stay tuned for our next roundtable in September!
