Relaunching your Career? Why Education Might be the Perfect Fit (and How to Get Started)

There are many reasons why people step out of the workforce for a short stint or for years—to raise young children, care for ailing parents or family members, or something else.

No matter the necessity or choice of stepping out of the workforce, getting back in can be tough.

Recently, some EP team members and I had the pleasure of attending the iRelaunch conference, where we met hundreds of talented people launching the second act of their careers. Previously, they’d been lawyers, management consultants, finance experts, marketing/communications professionals, and more. Now, after being out of the workforce for a time, they seek roles that fit their skills and expertise, as well as support to re-enter the job market.

The pitch that we gave these professionals is the same one I’m sharing here: public education.

The education sector has critical needs for talented people with skills like management, finance, operations, communications, and legal expertise. (And that’s exactly where EP specializes—non-instructional leadership roles, like managers and directors of finance, operations, HR, communications, and more.)

Education is a place to find a “mission match” as we work to serve all children well—and especially children of color and children from low-income families who are regularly underserved.

Interested in learning more about how to find a career that serves your needs as much as it serves students? Here are some resources to get you started:

1.       Join EP on Thursday, October 22nd at 1pm ET for a webinar: The Education Pioneers Fellowship and Relaunching Your Career. We’ll talk about candidates who have significant work experience and are interested in relaunching their careers through Education Pioneers' Fellowship opportunities. You’ll learn about how EP Fellows make a significant impact from outside the classroom, launch their career into positions of leadership in the education sector, and take advantage of Education Pioneers’ unique professional development and networking opportunities.

2.       iRelaunch offers “relauncher” events, coaching, and resources. Check out their website for free advice and success stories, plus paid support services (like resume and social media services), as well as the opportunity to connect with other relaunchers at in-person and virtual “boot camps,” and at their national conference.

3.       Get your resume ready. Here are some resources we share with EP applicants:

4.       Visit The Exchange Job Board (a joint venture between EP, The Broad Center, and the Strategic Data Project) to search for roles that might suit you. You can apply to open roles in education leadership across the country, or to the EP Fellowship to get matched with similar opportunities.

5.       Learn more about other career re-launching support and training organizations such as Mom Corps, MotherCoders, or Jobs and Moms. (Have another organization or site that I missed? Please share it in the comments!)

Returning to the workforce may not be easy, but you don’t have to go it alone. And if you’re a seasoned professional, your skills are in demand—especially in public education.
