EP ALUMNAE INNOVATE WITH TECHNOLOGY TO HELP MORE LOW-INCOME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE
Two of three finalists for the $5 million Robin Hood College Success Prize are organizations founded and led by EP Alumnae
The New York-based Robin Hood Foundation is putting a $5 million prize on the line to find scalable technology solutions that will double the college graduation rate of low-income students.
From more than 100 applicants and 18 semi-finalists, three finalist organizations were chosen to compete for the prize, which will be awarded pending a randomized control trial over the next three years.
Two of the three finalist organizations were launched and are led by EP Alumnae:
Beyond 12
Founded by EP Alumna Alexandra Bernadotte (Graduate School Fellow, 2007), Beyond 12 uses the “myCoach” mobile app to help students persist through college. By providing students with personalized tools, deadline reminders, and campus-specific tips, myCoach makes college easier to navigate.
“MyCoach translates the most effective actions of a coach, like motivation and nudges, to a highly scalable mobile platform,” Alex said. “The MyCoach app is a direct result of a personal conviction and commitment to ensure that other students don’t face the same struggles that I did.”
Kinvolved
Showing up for class is critical to succeed in school. In launching Kinvolved, EP Alumnae Alexandra Meis (Graduate School Fellow, 2012) and Miriam Altman (Graduate School Fellow, 2012) are using a mobile app to increase attendance and transform students’ success.
“Our app uses attendance as an indicator of major problems that may be preventing students from succeeding. Our goal is to link them efficiently with the resources they need to get back to class every day and on the path to success,” said Alex.
EP ALUMNA’S REVOLUTIONARY SCHOOL MEALS COMPANY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST INNOVATIVE
Revolution Foods, co-founded by EP Alumna Kristin Groos Richmond, named one of Fast Company’s “The World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” in 2015
Alongside behemoths Apple, Google, Instagram, and more, Revolution Foods is holding its own. Named as one of Fast Company’s “World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” for “selling good, cheap food to children who need it most,” Revolution Foods brings over 1 million healthy, delicious “kid-inspired, chef-crafted” meals to students every week.
Founded in 2005 by EP Alumna Kristin Groos Richmond (Graduate School Fellow, 2005) and Kirsten Saenz Tobey, Revolution Foods is changing free or reduced-price meal programs across the country so that students can focus on learning.
EP ALUMNUS DESMOND PATTON HAS RESEARCH CITED IN THE U.S. SUPREME COURT
Desmond Patton (Graduate School Fellow, 2006), Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, recently had his research cited by the U.S. Supreme Court. Desmond’s research, “Social Media as a Vector for Youth Violence,” was cited in the brief submitted for the U.S. Supreme Court case Elonis v. United States.
