Newark Public Schools (NPS), which serves 38,000 students in 71 schools, is the largest school system in New Jersey and one of the oldest educational systems in the country.
With a mission to develop productive citizens who are distinguished academically and willing to challenge the status quo, NPS works hard to provide all children with access to emotionally safe and intellectually challenging schools and classrooms. The district has made considerable improvements in student achievement in reacent years: the number of freshmen on track to graduate from NPS increased from 38% to 80% from 2009-2010 to 2013-2014, and five NPS schools received gold, silver, or bronze medals U.S. News’ Best High Schools (2013).
Since 2010, 22 Education Pioneers have supported NPS’ work on behalf of Newark students. They have:
- Worked with the Superintendent’s team to implement talent management technology, develop student engagement strategy, and track school operations to ensure successful school openings.
- Led communications about new teacher evaluation systems to increase understanding and gain critical support from key stakeholders.
- Coordinated the creation of two new high schools from 14 separate alternative education programs, engaging the community and aligning resources for a smooth turnaround.
- Researched alternative compensation models and New Jersey pension and healthcare legislation and drafted legal positions to prepare NPS’ negotiation team for union negotiations.
- And more.
